Share prices around the world continued to climb during the first quarter of 2010, extending the bull market in stocks beyond its first birthday.
In early April, an important new sign reinforced the view that the U.S. economy is growing once more, if only slowly: The U.S. Labor Department reported that the number of non-farm jobs in America rose by 162,000 in March. |

|
In our core presentation, we will review:
-
The U.S. Labor Department's encouraging report on employment conditions in March;
-
The solid results recorded by broad swaths of the bond market, with the notable exception of U.S. Treasuries; and
-
The strong advance in U.S. stocks and the weaker, though still positive, results of international shares.
In the first of our two feature presentations, we'll explore the deleveraging of the U.S. economy and find that significant reductions in household and corporate debts have been almost entirely offset by large increases in government debts. Our second feature will review the rebound in corporate earnings and find that cost-cutting has been key, while revenue growth has been weak.
